MINDFULNESS AND YOGA FOR CHILDREN: TEACHER TRAINING Jennifer Cohen and Daniel Rechtschaffen AUG 2-6
Educators, parents and caregivers are increasingly realizing the potential of mindfulness, yoga and awareness based practices to strengthen and support the children in their lives. Our fast paced culture leaves children feeling stressed, disconnected, and fearful of the future. Awareness based education offers a multi-dimensional and holistic approach to meeting the interrelated physical, cognitive, emotional, and social needs of youth, bringing children relaxation, clarity, compassion, and inner strength.
This five day training gives educators, parents, and childcare providers practical tools for bringing mindfulness and yoga to children in grades K-12.
New research shows that yoga and mindfulness practices decrease stress, anxiety and depression in children, while improving emotional regulation, ability to focus and social relations. This workshop addresses emotional and physical wellbeing, both of which are proven contributors to academic achievement. The techniques you will learn make yoga and mindfulness accessible to children of all ages, and provide them with tools for lifelong wellness.
The training will begin with personal retreat time to ground the participants in their own practice of mindfulness and yoga. Once we have learned to embody these teachings for ourselves there will be extensive training in offering awareness and movement practices to children from K-12th grade. We will offer curriculum in several different modalities, including:
Mindfulness Practices Yoga and Body Awareness Compassionate Communication Cooperation Based Play Emotional Regulation Nature Awareness
Training participants can expect to take with them a deepened personal practice as well as a foundation for implementing awareness based curriculum in different settings. We will discuss current research and provide an overview of the establishments already integrating these practices. Time will be spent on teaching methods for different ages, populations and special needs. Participants will learn how to apply these techniques both in a professional, educational environment and in their own homes.
Participants will leave with a curriculum synthesizing information from Daniel's Awareness Based Curriculum with Jennifer's Little Flower Yoga Program, a renewed sense of self-awareness and the ability to bring that awareness to others.
MINDFULNESS AND EDUCATION CONFERENCE AUG 6-8
Mindfulness is a meditative technique that fosters inner calm, increased awareness, and a sense of well-being. Over the past three decades, the practice of mindfulness has been taught to adults in hospitals and clinics to assist in pain management, stress reduction, and healing. Now mindfulness is being introduced into school curriculums.
The new field of teaching mindfulness in our nation’s schools is a profoundly beneficial development for the education of children from grades K through 12. Research shows that mindfulness decreases stress, attention deficit issues, depression, anxiety, and hostility in children, while benefiting their health, well-being, social relations, and academic performance. Children can easily learn these techniques, and when learned young, they become lifelong tools.
Omega has drawn together several leaders in this important, emerging field to offer educators not only practical techniques for teaching mindfulness, but also instruction for teachers, administrators, child care providers, family therapists, and parents who want to cultivate their own mindfulness practice for greater stress relief, presence, and emotional balance.
During the weekend we enjoy our own mindfulness retreat, as well as talks and demonstrations from cutting-edge researchers in the field, instruction in practical application, question-and-answer sessions, and guided movement.
In breakout sessions and panel discussions we also explore: • Introducing the value of mindfulness to public and private school administrators • Nature awareness and environmental education • Working with diverse student populations • Leading mindfulness movement and yoga
